All the motors are reliable only if you have the right sense of driving! Every motor performs as per the specifications for which it is designed! A one liter engine cannot perform same as two liter engine and so too the performance of the motor as a whole! The performance and cost variation, even between all realible motors are unimaginably great!
So the reliability of the car always depends equally on the responsible drivng of a reliable driver!
Cheapest car? - For whom? The world's cheapest car is yet to be made for the world's poorest man to buy!

We've had a Peugeot 406 estate for 5 years now as it is the biggest car in which to carry around 2 Newfoundlands. It had 90,000 miles on when we bought it and it's still going strong. Diesel 2 litre and so fast on acceleration it's unbelievable. Recommend one to anybody. It does about 50 to the gallon and superb round town too.

it depends on the car. i agree with most of whats written above, but would take a toyota with full service history over a porsche with no history any day. history is key here. do not touch anything with a rover k series engine, (mrf, freelander etc) and you should be ok. i would say mercedes. there is one in the stutgart museum, that mercedes purchased off the owner. it has done 2000,000 miles, been serviced every 200,000 miles, and still running strong. porsches need servicing at least every 100,000 miles, toyota /lexus are pretty bombproof mechanically. if they have full service history. any idiot can screw up any engine by not servicing it.

Strangely, the owner surveys always put the Japanese in the lead, Honda, [made in UK], nearly always come top, the expensive German cars are nearly always in the bottom 20. Cheapest to run, you need a small engined car.

I do not know it is the cheapest to run, but I would say Toyota and Honda brands; even Europeans would rather go Japanese. Keep in mind I like GM's, but reread above.

Any car from Toyota or Honda. All cars get great gas mileage, much better than any Mercedes or BMW.
