why do some people put plastic jugs , filled with water in their yard ?

i live in a predominatly hispanic area , is this a mexican thing ??

NO it is not a Mexican thing, but it keeps the flys away, because it is said that if a fly sees its own reflection, it will get really scared and fly away.

In New Mexico I've seen people hang plastic bags filled with water on the patios to keep flys away. Can't say if it worked, but can say I ate on such patios and saw no flys. I wonder if this could be for the same purpose?
