Russian Empire (soviet era)

Strangely enough, the Lakota were a subgroup of the Sioux and probably had little to do with the other tribes. By treaty or by God given right, they still don't control the land someone prior to me spoke of and never did. Not to mention if they ever wanted to control that land, they'd be hard pressed to do so considering they amounted to 20,000 people in the 18th century and only now can claim over 70,000 people. Good luck holding the land. But, that's not the point, I just like arguing against people that come on here with seemingly political agendas.
In answer to the question asked, the largest continuous land empire ever known would be the Mongolian which was led by Ghengis Khan and then later Khublai Khan. It lasted roughly 100 years or so. But I believe the Brits had conquered the most land. Of course, much of this land was crap, largely unpopulated, and mostly unusable. But still, the British Empire was the largest empire with roughly 36.6million km^2.
However, this should be taken as merely a guesstimate, for it is quite difficult to prove the true amount of land in an empire.

British Empire never ruled the whole land it conquerred. The British ruled the seas.

The correct answer is: Russian Empire.

1/6 of Earth land surface, from Poland on the West to Alaska on the East, from the Arctic to Central Asia.

If you are going to go by LAND AREA, the answer is clear: It was the Lakotas (commonly referred to as the Sioux). They held land from the Hudson Bay on the north down into central Mexico; from areas next to the Atlantic Ocean to the Rocky Mountains and into the Southwest.
And, don't forget, the Great White Father (the President) made a treaty with Red Cloud, promising him "his two mountains", which includes the eastern half of Wyoming, western South Dakota, the southeastern part of Montana, and Nebraska (to the Missouri River, which is Nebraska's eastern border). By treaty, this is still THEIR land.

Alexander the Great established the largest LAND empire known to man. The British established the largest empire if you include seas, but many historians do not.

The largest empire ever built was the British empire. it ruled around 1/4th of the whole globe it its height of power. but if you are talking about the one single person that controlled the most lands, well Genghis khan ruled from japan china to Iran in his life time, his son Kublai khan ruled from japan to Hungary. but it was a very short lived and unsuccessful empire. they will also fit in in the same category with the shortest lived empire, less than a 100 years. how bad is that.

edit. people are so stupid thy piss me off. "British didn't rule the lands, they ruled the seas". i suppose Russians preferred Americans, Australians, New Zealand, south Africans and Canadians speak English rather than Russian, or why are they still ruled by the queen. or why is India, Pakistan, several African countries including Egypt have so many British foot prints in them. or why is Iraq, Syria, Pakistan still study British imperialism in their history books. or why is both north and south poles have British flags in them. or why is the people of the Caribbean speak English.

Do you mean a single person? Probably Genghis Khan, who brought most of northern and western Asia under his control.
