x + 3y = 23 ........(1)
3x - 2y = 3 .........(2)

From (1):
x = 23 - 3y
Substitute this value for x in (2):
3(23 - 3y) - 2y = 3
Expand brackets:
69 - 9y - 2y = 3
69 - 11y = 3
66 - 11y = 0
y = 6.

Substitute this in (1) to get x:
x + 18 = 23
x = 5.

Check:
5 + 3*6 = 23
3*5 - 2*6 = 3.

If you want to use the substitution method...look at the first equation. If x+3y=23, then x=23-3y
Substitute this value of x into the 2nd equation-
3 (23 - 3y) -2y = 3
69 - 9y -2y = 3
66 = 11y
6=y
if y=6, then x = 23 - 3*6 = 5

5 + 3*6 = 23
3*5 - 2*6 = 3

yes you do use the substitution method
x+3y=23
3x-2y=3
here we go..since u have x alone in the first one solve for x
x=23-3y
then u substitute 23-3y for wherever x is in the second equation
3(23-3y)-2y=3
now u have all the same letter and can solve the equatino for y
3(23-3y)-2y=3
69-9y-2y=3
then clean it up a lil and solve for y by gettin y on one side and numbers on the other side
69-3=9y+2y
66=11y
6=y

now for x you would just substitute y=6 into the first equation and solve for x
x+3y=23
x+3(6)=23
x+18=23
x=23-18
x=5

x=23-3y, re-arrange equation1
3(23-y) - 2y = 3, substitute in equation 2
y=6

x = 23 - 3(6), substitute in re-arranged equation1
x=5

Checks:
5+3(6) = 23
23 =23

3(5) -2(6) = 3
3 = 3

x = 5y + 7 via including 5y to the two factors of equation a million 2(5y + 7) - 4y = 14 substituting for x in equation 2 10y + 14 - 4y = 14 dispensing 6y + 14 = 14 subtract 14 from the two factors 6y = 0 divide the two factors via 6 y = 0 x = 5(0) + 7 replace y = 0 into equation a million x = 7 answer (7, 0) you may examine via substituting x=7 and y=0 in the two equations and determine you get a identity 7=7 or 14=14

2x + 6y = 46
9x - 6y = 9---ADD
11x = 55
x = 5

5 + 3y = 23
3y = 18
y = 6

x = 5 , y = 6

OR
x = 23 - 3y
3(23 - 3y) - 2y = 3
69 - 9y - 2y = 3
11y = 66
y = 6
x = 23 - 18
x = 5
x = 5 , y = 6 as before.
