Say what? I would say that history really matters; the problem is, too many people are trying to push their agenda and don't stop for little things like facts.
There are so many instances of this: How many Colonies were there at the beginning of the Revolutionary War? Most people would say 13, because that's what they teach in school. Even if you consider that, originally, there was the Plimouth Colony and the Massachusetts Bay Colony and the ateheists overran Plimouth, making it into one Colony, there were still more than 13.
Or, how about, were the original Egyptians black? That was brought up on Y! answers; it makes sense to believe that they were.
Or, how did the Indians get here? For such a long time, "scientists" have claimed that the People (Indians) walked across the Bering Strait from Siberia during the last ice age. Can you imagine walking across a frozen ocean, heaving, with great chasms opening up to swallow the wary, crossing high mountains covered with ice, having to carry tools, bedding, and food for thousands of miles? Doesn't it make more sense to go with the People, who claimed they came by boat?
There is the modern notion of separation of church and state; yet, apparently every convention of the Founding Fathers began with a prayer. Liberals take the truth and change it to what they want.
Then there are the do-gooders; you know, those who don't talk about unpleasant subjects, hoping no one will ask, such things as slavery. Who were the slaves? In actuality, they were any people that were conquered, or freed from jail, including indentured servants, who were beaten, murdered, raped the same as "slaves".
There are so many instances where history does matter; if people will only use history, and not make up things.
