I do live in the South, and I have been using that term for a long time. Every couple that moves in across the street HANGS on the front porch and I always think "porch monkeys" when go out. And they have all been white folks.

I have never seen "Clerks 2" so your reference is the first time I have heard of it.
Perhaps it's used more in certain areas so some people have heard that term for years and others (like myself) generally don't hear it at all.
Also, because of your question, I understand that it's a racial slur so I will be careful not to use it.

I've lived in South Florida all my life (don't really know if that's considered "the South" or not), and had never heard the term until my boyfriend (from California) told me his co-worker would use it. Before then, I'd never heard it. That was about a year and a half ago.

I havent heard that term used to be a racial slur, and I've lived in the South for all my 46 years.
That term, and the term "yard ape" I've always heard as a derogatory term for children of people of lesser means. "Trailer trash" would be another term with similar meaning.
Maybe that word means something else in other parts of the South, but not around here....

I have, but thats primarily do to the fact that black people call each other the names that we will get shot at for calling them. When I was young, my mother was best friends with a black lady and her siblings were around my age. They would call each other every racial term there was. I once made the mistake of calling them one as a joke and I got a spanking.
Go Figure!

I have been around Black folks all my life; my two kids are half-Black; everyone I've ever dated was Black, and as many terms as I've heard, Porch Monkey was also a new one on me. But, man, Randall sure didn't know when to shut up, did he?
However, no racism intended, but many of us in our circle of friends called our younger kids "Yard Apes" no matter what color they were (also "Ankle-Biters"), and since we all had cats as pets, we called them "Yard Lions."

I am a Southerner, and although I've been aware of the term as long as I can recall, it is not commonly used here. My hubby grew up in Cali, and he says he heard it used all the time out there.

i'm from the north like you...
but here "porch monkeys" refer to little kids jumping around, y'know like rugrats...?!
as far as referring to race, the only thing I've ever heard said is Chris Rock in his early comdey specials who referred to the youngsters as 'niglets!'
other than that...
take care, eh?!
;-)
