Waves do not come in groups of seven. They are actual irregular.

See quote and links below.

Sorry Trevor, but you are only partially right. Wave are not created by the seabed. Out croppings of rock, islands, reefs, raised seabed areas (sandbars, shallows, etc) can divert and shape the waves. They are created by winds; see below.
Other than that, Trevor, you are correct.

Quote following the link below is a direct quote from said link.

http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/ocean/Waves.shtml

"The winds cause waves on the surface of the ocean (and on lakes). The wind transfers some of its energy to the water, through friction between the air molecules and the water molecules. Stronger winds (like storm surges) cause larger waves. You can make your own miniature waves by blowing across the surface of a pan of water.
Waves of water do not move horizontally, they only move up and down (a wave does not represent a flow of water). You can see a demonstration of this by watching a floating buoy bob up and down with a wave; it does not, however, move horizontally with the wave.

Tsunamis (sometimes called tidal waves) are different from surface waves; they are usually caused by underwater earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or landslides."

Another site to check; has more detail on waves.

Waves are created by the shape of the sea bed, as the mass of water approaches land the water is slowed at the sea bed, the water at the surface continues forward at a greater speed being pushed along by the water behind it. This leads to the rising up of the wave and formation of the classic wave shape, ultimately the wave collapses on itself or when it makes landfall. Wave formation is determined by other factors such as the wind speed, slope and shape of the sea bed and as such different types of waves form in different parts of the world and in different conditions but they don't come in sets of seven.
