Several things define me, but to name a few:
My love of my husband, Mateus.
My grief over my lost daughter, Victoria.
My history of depression, and often teetering on the brink of madness.
My weight (I am overweight) and my ways of coping with society telling me I am not normal and won't be until I look like those airbrushed models in the pages of Vogue.
My lifetime of moving, and the lack of friends it produced.

My answer is ME. I am a work of art--God's art--and I am continuously defining and re-defining who I am as a person. The actions I take (be it to ignore the homeless person down the street or to spontaneously give that same homeless person a $5 bill so they can buy their next meal) will further define who I am. Often, no one else is watching. You might also ask what defines LIFE? Personally, I think there are tangible and intangible aspects. Tangible would be the things that can be easily written down on paper about a person (position within a company, level of education, wealth obtained). However, what might initially sound impressive on paper probably sums to the least important part of life. More important are the intangible aspects; how someone positively changed the life of just one other person (sometimes without even realizing it). Hopefully that positive aspect gets carried out tenfold. I will forever be a student of LIFE but at any moment I might also be a teacher. As a teacher, my goal will forever be to help JUST ONE MORE PERSON. Thoughts like that help define who I am...

1/ That my children phone me just to know how i am doing .
( They are abroad,UK and SA,)or simply talked about the last Rugby match.
2/ A smile and a waving from a friend while driving the car.
3/ In the supermarket when , without asking , one of the persons working there will place my favourite coffee brand in the basket..
4/ Great feeling of peace i have when looking at a sunset or sunrise on the beach.
5/ Tears rolling down my cheeks when looking at one of my my little dogs dying , not so long ago.
There are a lot of simple things like that make me feel i am a "person".

Hi Kim:
There probably is no simple answer to this question. Once you've reached a certain age, you realize that there are a myriad of factors involved in shaping you into the YOU you have become at that specific moment (not quite the same as you were five minutes ago, neither as you'll be mere seconds from now!) These include, parents, siblings, family, friends, teachers, the school bully, that obnoxious nanny who baby sat for you in Grade 4, the Corporal you lucked out with during your Army basic training boot camp, the Prof. with the sexy legs, and warm smile you fell head over heels in love with at university, the first girl you kissed, the one with whom you lost your innocence (virginity), your first child being born, the saleman who sold you your first rust bucket jallopy VW Beetle, etc. etc. The list can go on and on and on and on (depending, I suppose, on the number of years you've accumilated, and more importantly, on how perceptive you are). Each and every person with whom you come in contact, can (and probably will) have some influence upon the outcome . . ., just like each and every experience you have, from simple pleasures such as an extra thick chocolate milkshake, to that wonderful orgasm you achived with your red head prom date in the back of your old man's '69 Chevy. From a melt in the mouth steak on top of the Eiffel Tower, to lying in a fox hole on the freezing desert night in Iran; from spending a night amongst drunks, pimps and hoods in the local cop station because they caught you driving under the influence of maruyana, and ending up doing six months community service, to helping an old lady across a busy intersection in downtown Nairobi; to haveing your first born pee all over you just as you are about to close up a brand new nappy, to standing next to the open grave of your Dad, with tears making you see just a glimmer of the people surrounding that open hole where his body now will lie and rot for ever . . .
Strangely, it is life's little surprises that makes for the best memories, even getting an e-mail from an old buddy who you haven't seen in decades, just simply saying: "I thought about you today - have a nice weekend!"
It's a pleasure to share . . . Hope U Njoy!

WHO: My children, because being called "mommy" is the best definition I've ever had. Even on the worst days, it's the best. It's stunning to look at them & think I have something I wouldn't trade for a billion dollars or a million wishes.
WHAT: My work with savedarfur.org, Native American children in Montana at St. Labre school, and for environmental causes. It's trying to make the world a better place in whatever small way you can.

the people we encounter on a daily basis. Collectively they know us better than we know ourselves, the problem is, we will never know their score and we judge ourselves on reactions we get from people we know well. The only a clearer picture is drawn is when somebody dies so i guess we will never know ...or maybe we will. Any way try not to judge yourself or others as human beings. because we are basically equally the same. and we were all given the gift of life. would you say a tree is not a tree or a cat is not a cat lets not go there ... yet

My relashionship with my dad is one of the defining influences in my life; he's the reason I'm so smart and commited to being a better person than most of the idiots I meet.
And of course everyone defines themselves at one point or another.

I do.
Nobody else.
I may be defined differently to many people, as the differences may be accounted for as property of the individual, but in the end, it is my choices that create that definition.

Nothing defines me for but a short period.

As a person, I have changed so much over the course of decades, that any attempt to define is only true of the moment. At one time, I was a child. this is no longer true. At one time, I was a student. this is no longer true. At one time, I was young. this is no longer true. At one time I was a loner. This is no longer true. At one time, I was shy. This is no longer true.

Most people can be shown to adapt, change and evolve over time. I wouldn't let anyone or anything define you.
