The Federalists wanted a Constitution which created a strong central government from powers delegated via the Constitution. The Anti-Federalists wanted to retain State sovereignty and have combined efforts through the existing Articles of Confederation.

The Federalists' view points on this issue are described in 85 papers published as the "Federalist Papers."

The Anti-Federalists' view points are published in book form titled the "Anti-Federalist Papers" in about as many papers.

Both are easily obtainable through your local library and also on the Internet.

You have to understand that during the time of forming of our country there were lots of views on how to go about it. It took some debate where all decided that they did not want a king for sure, nor any form of government that is ruled by one person. From these type of debates by the young men, most that wrote the constitution were in their 30's, they struggled against lots of ideas on how to make a more perfect government. As you had to make all the people, states, happy they had to do things that some where not happy with to gain what they wanted, the show of our first politicians. In the end Federalist were stronger in what they wanted in the shaping of the country, forming the 3 branches and trying to make sure neither had power over the other but worked as one government. They seemed to come up with a constitution that has worked for some 200+ years and knew that they did not have a perfect constitution they made sure there were ways to amend it to make it work for the times. The Anti did come up with the next best thing in the country and that was the bill of rights, so if we did not have them we be missing a very important part of our country. It took both to make our country what it is, the best country.

if memory serves . . . Federalists favored a strong central government. They wanted a central bank with a strong national currency, and a President with more powers rather than less. Congress having the power to regulate what goes on between the various states. Only Federal govt could make a treaty with a foreign power.
