I have been thinking about opening my own place for a while, but not sure exactly where to begin. Has anyone successfully opened their own restaurant or bar? What did you do to start it off?

There's a lot of steps for this...but the most important step that will make or break your business is LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. Look for a place with good parking, possibly on a main street where lots of traffic goes by daily, something that is not too expensive. Also, look for something that is a good size with possibly a dance floor and a stage. And lastly, try to find something that is close, but not too close, to homes. If it is too close to homes, you'll get a lot of complaints and the cops will keep coming by. There's nothing better to run customers away from a business then cops constantly dropping by.

I run an office administration company and a huge part of my job is research for companies, as well as keeping books for a variety of businesses. You would not believe how many restaurants go under because people choose bad and small locations that cost more then they are bringing in. If you think the location is expensive, then wait for another location. Something will most likely come up in a month or two, and it will be worth the wait.

In the meantime, get all your licenses in order...Alcohol license, business license, fictitious business name, and seller's permit. Start finding vendors who will sell you and deliver alcohol. Look for some bands to help you with Opening Night or Opening Weekend...you'll want this to be a huge celebration, so you will invite everyone you know and everyone they know. And just look for books that tell you how to do what you need to do. There are books out there on "How To Open and Run a Restaurant / Coffee Bar", etc. It's worth the $15 cost to get these because they will give you an idea of how much startup money you will need.

Hope this helps.

I have observed that location matters more than the specialty. Also, tourists like to see familiar dishes. Good luck.
