I believe I was paid $1.00 an hour plus tips on my first job. I worked as a waitress and dishwasher in a small local restaurant. Of course gas was only 25 cents a gallon at the time and I was living at home. This was during the summer between graduating from high school and starting college and I just had the 40 year reunion of my graduation from highschool this spring.

In 1972 I worked as a business machine operator for $1.50 an hour. One gallon of gas was 35 cents and so was a pack of cigarettes. A 40 oz. bottle of beer was I believe 50 cents. How things have changed!

I think it was around $2.35 in the 70s when I started working. (I remember seeing gas for 25 cents/gallon - 24.9 actually - in Seattle in the 60s.)
