You need a Wireless Router/Modem or the Wireless router.. You can get one on Ebay for around $25-40.

It would be helpful if you provided better and complete information. It never ceases to amaze me that people want help but forget to provide details.

I will assume the following:

1. You have a broadband Internet service, either DSL or CATV and it is terminated with a Motorola brand modem provided by the ISP.
2. Your desk top pc's LAN port is connected directly to the internet feed from teh Motorola.
3. You now wish to enable your laptop to access the internet from home. It has both a wireless and a wired connector.

Given the above:

1. You will need a gateway router (not an access router) to enable more than 1 pc to share the internet connection.
2. The router can be one that provides only wired LAN connections or it can be one that provides both wired and wireless connections. If you want the laptop to communicate via wireless protocol you need a wireless router.
3. There are several different makers of household grade routers. Common ones are Linksys, Netgear, D Link, and Belkin. All of these are the lower end, less costly, very popular, and borderline capable units. Within a given brand, better quality equates to higher cost most of the time. 3 Com costs a bit more but is a lot better quality.
4. You will have to consult your router manual for specific installation instructions. However here are some common poionts:
a. Always configure the router using a wired connection from pc to router.
b. connect the modem internet feed into the wan port of the router
c. connect the pc LAN port to a LAN port of the router.
d. reboot modem, router, and pc after connecting. After modem has been off 0.5 minutes, turn on router and about 1 min after that turn on pc.
e. After all equipment is on, you should be able to access router using your web browser and using the IP address of your router (see the manual). Configure WAN port of router as directed for your ISP's internet connection.
f. after the wired conneciton works, configure wireless. Be sure to impose security - encryption w. preshare key, MAC address validation, etc as shown in manual.
g. now see if you have internet on notebook; if not troubleshoot

I cannot provide more info at this point without writing a major book.

write again if you have problems.

You need a wireless router to be able to use the WIFI card on your laptop. If not, then you must plug an RJ45 cable from the laptop to the DSL modem.
