Because you are only human...we all do that. Nobody wants to be accused of things, especially if they are untrue. This is an assault on your character and it is normal that it bothers you. Nobody likes that! Brush yourself off and go on though.

Because you know you did not do it.
This of course depends on what you are being accused of, if it isn't criminal and no charges can be brought forward, then it is ok to let it go.
Another way is to go to the person you believe thinks this of you and simply state the truth, "I didn't take your pen, you know"
just an example.
Sometimes you think you were accused and that is not what they meant, communicate the fact that you are feeling wrongly accused, it may shed a different light on the matter totally, you have to be able to speak up. If it is a matter of "you don't have an opinion" get out of that situation as you are dealing with someone who judges and accuses without giving the other a chance. Not right.

When you get accused of something you did not do, don't let it preoccupy any space in your head though it is hard knowing our human weakness and depending on the gravity of the thing you have been accused of.
I understand why people offer space within their head of something they have been accused of, the gravity of what they have been accused of, the shame or embarrassment they or their family will suffer and the lost of dignity the accused will also suffer.
But with all the reasons I underscored above, the encouraging and therapeutic thing to do when falsely accused is to look within your conscious and God, once you are innocent, do not be moved with all other that happens around you

I think its because eventhough it may not be true you still need to rationalize with yourself why you were accused? does this person know something about me that maybe i dont?
am i a sociapath who is so self centered i cant see my own crimes?
My own self doubt makes me wonder if maybe i was wrong. but after a few long hard months of self analysis most people come to realize for themselves if its true or not.
then how do we change the characteristic or action and move on without being ridiculed for being proven wrong?
or if we were right in the first place how do we prove it so we never get accused again?
if you never go thru this self doubt that leads to self awareness, you might be a danger to society.
