Nothing is a historic mistake in my view.

The decisions and the desire of the people involved was to have an autonomous and self-defining governments. Creating a new state and government that only represents one religions is a problem of religion and people's religious beliefs.

Like any of us, they did what they thought was the best to do at the time. Until learn the role of religion, language and culture in the process, we will continue to do things which later be viewed as mistakes.

Yes. The partition was over religion. Today, there is a large Muslim population in India, as well as Pakistan and Bangladesh (then E Pakistan). Life for religious minorities is gradually getting better in the "two Pakistans". Today, all three countries would be better off unified, they could solve the disputes in Kashmir and in Pakistan's NW Frontier.

At that moment partition was the only solution. So everyone agreed for it. After the partition of Bengal by British in 1905, almost it became impossible for the Hindus & Muslims to live together. From that time our leaders struggled for the unity of Hindus & Muslims, but could not succeed, so we cant term it as a Mistake.
