I just got a gateway brand new model laptop. I do not know how to connect to the internet with it w/o having to pay. I want to use it in my home.

laptop has a builtin wirless card and i have a modem for my pc which is cable.

You can buy the wireless router if there are more than 2 computers.If you look for the router, you should buy the G router. Otherwise, if there is only 1 computer, which is your Gateway, you should buy the Wireless N router.

What sort of Internet connection do you have at your home? Do you have a router at home? If so what type of router?
Do you have a wired network at home or do you wish to access wirelessly?
Does the new laptop have a built in wireless capability?
You need to clarify what you have.

you can't connect to the Internet without paying. wireless is a signal, just like cable or dsl or whatever. unless you're lucky enough to live in one of the cities where they have installed wireless to the entire city there has to be a signal, be it wireless or any other, before you can connect to the Internet.
