They are not taking over California. There are a lot of them, and they want a life. They need a life. They want food and shelter. The reason that they came here was because they need food and shelter. Not because they want to take your jobs!
It's not only California that has a lot of Mexicans, either. In Chicago there's a lot of them. I don't see why there's a problem with seeing a Mexican working.
They need it! They need it more than you do. You can always get an online job!

No, you're screwed up. Why does everything always have to come down to race. If you're qualified for a job, you should be able to get one. Many Latinos are working in menial positions. They're priority is to have a roof over their heads and food to eat. If you can't find a job, then you're not looking in the right places or you're too proud to take what's out there. Many immigrants, though, will take whatever job they can find so they can support themselves and their families. You should try it. Stop complaining that Latinos are "taking over California". What the hell does that mean? Are you racist or something? Who cares how many Latinos, Blacks, Asians or whatever are out there. People who concern themselves with one's race are RACIST.

I live in Southern California and in different areas here Hispanics far outnumber Caucasians and other races. I can understand why some answerers to this question think this is a racist question. Yet I would like to respectfully point out that when you live in an area that is about 80% Hispanic (as my last town I lived in is) and you go to the bank or other business and you find signs written in Spanish first and THEN in English, then it IS disconcerting and frustrating because whether or not the Mexicans were here in California first (they came here AFTER the Indians were here), the fact remains that this is the United States of America and we speak English here. I actually received a bank statement from Bank of America once and the whole thing was written in Spanish. I am white. On the very small print on the reverse, I saw some English. Lucky for me, I can speak and understand SOME Spanish. I called the bank and was told it was a mistake, but you see, because of the town I lived in where people are primarily Hispanic, the zip code triggered something in their computer system and spit out a Spanish-language bank statement for me.
I do not support racism, as anyone who sees my answers to racist questions can find out (those racist questions are usually deleted though). I do not believe however, that this questioner is being racist, even though the question could have been worded better. There are plenty of jobs to be had for white people and other races. If one is not finding a job, then one is not looking in the right places. As one person answered, many Hispanics are taking the menial jobs that whites don't want to take. This is true. I live in a condo and the very nice landscaping crew that comes here every day to make where I live beautiful, travels from Tijuana, Mexico each and every day, to come to work here where I live in the San Diego area. They get paid a meager wage, work their tails off in the very hot sun, drive the 20 minutes or so to the border, then wait an hour or two to get across the border to get home, where it is cheaper to live because it costs so much to live here. These are not illegal aliens. They are American Hispanics trying to support their families.
Life is what you make it. It's tough to find a job when you need one. Still, jobs are there for everyone. You just have to apply yourself. One of the things I have admired about the Hispanic culture here is a work ethic where one does what one has to do to make a living and support a family. Often, 2-3 families will live in one home, and will all pool their resources together to make ends meet. Pretty smart, if you ask me. While it can appear trashy-looking for 5 cars to be in one driveway and parked on the lawn, and beds in someone's garage because 2 or 3 families are living in one home, it is also highly commendable that people are willing to put up with the inconvenience of sharing a home with so many people so that they can pool their resources and live a better life here in Southern California where the average home price is well over a half million dollars and the average 3-bedroom rental unit, apartment or otherwise is about $2000.00 per month. I have to respect a culture that puts a high value on family and hard work.
As to the frustrations that the person asking the question is speaking of, these are valid frustrations and should not be considered as racist. There are many poor white people who cannot get welfare, Medi-Cal (Medicaid) or food stamps when they need it because they don't meet the strict requirements to qualify, yet many people who come across the border to work in the US not only can get these services, but they don't have to learn the language of the country. If we go to another country, we are expected to learn their language. There is nobody catering to our English and putting everything in English first and then German or English and then French. No, we are expected to learn the language of the country we live in. In the last town I lived in, several Hispanics staged a protest for immigrant rights. That is fine. There should be fair treatment of all. What I took an exception to however, was that many of those protesting were in the US, waving their Mexican flags. When people disrespect the nation they are in by waving a flag from another country in protest of their new country's policies, then it shuts down fair thinking and brings about resentment rather than promoting change.
I support fair treatment for all immigrants to this country. We are a nation of immigrants. People should spend time talking with their Mexican/Hispanic neighbors and getting to know them. I have learned from my Hispanic friends about how much they are trying to make an honest and happy life for themselves and how difficult it can be for them in this country. It's true that it is hard to find work at times, but it is not the fault of Hispanics. They are trying to find work too and often take the icky jobs that the rest of us think are beneath us. Welfare reform is definately needed, no matter what the situation. I think most people can agree on that. Helping people to learn English is good, but I think it goes too far when everything is translated into a foreign language rather than increasing accessibility to English as a Second Language (ESL) classes wherein one can learn the language more quickly. Finally, I would like to say that immigration from Mexico into the US has increased tremendously during the last few years, so much so, that in many areas, white, English-speaking Americans are becoming a minority. So for those of us who are noticing this trend, it does not mean we are racist. It means we are beginning to feel the increased changes, and as change is frequently uncomfortable, it is disconcerting at times. We can all be at peace with one another if we try to have mutual understanding of the perspective of one another. My Hispanic friends understand my frustration about things being translated into Spanish all the time and I understand their frustration about them being treated as lower class citizens and treated as if the only thing they are worthy of is low-paying, no benefit jobs. There does need to be a change.
