Actually they are mildly venomous. A lot of people are unaware of it though. It is not enough to cause you to die, but a lot of people who are bit by them will have a mild reaction. It is usually just a little swelling and a rash at the site of the bite.

No garter snake is poisonous. In North America there are only 4 poisonous snakes: rattlesnakes, water moccasins, coral snakes and copperheads and there is one poisonous lizard; the gila monster.

Aww, garter snakes are harmless. :) I live in Western Washington too. Used to be a dog park near me and when I was little, I chased down the garter snakes. :) You got nothin' to worry about.
