Hi guys,

I'm just starting to build my shirt/tie wardrobe for work. I'm just wondering where to start off. Most of the time, I'll be wearing a black suit. I am planning on getting a few white dress shirts, maybe some light blues and gray as well.

What would be the 'staple' ties to go along? I have a few blue patterned, but I really like solid color ties...like cherry red, and silver. What would be the couple of ties i should start with?

Thanks!

You can never have too many white shirts and neckties.
White shirts go with most suits, they look professional and authoritative. That said, they need to be replaced about every six months, depending on how many you have in your rotation. They will start to "yellow" and look threadbare.

As for ties, avoid theme ties, goofy ties, funny ties, etc. They make you look like a clown.
Avoid ties that are too thin or too fat. The rule of thumb with a tie is that its widest part should be the same width as the widest part of your jacket's lapel. However, don't chase fashion unless you have deep pockets.
Outside of the above, ties are very personal. They are one of the few items in a man's wardrobe that he can express himself with, especially at work. So, most everything else goes.

G That can happen right away. Just start a "build a better world" club. Lots of kids will join for a little bit. You can ask for donations and build little Ikea things to give to people who can't afford them. Pretty soon, you will be on TV, and politicians will want to have their picture taken with you. Then you can quote some president about the greater future, and get a scholarship to a great school in a beautiful place.

hmmmm....
1 red 1 black 1 navy 1 gray 1 checked.
Those should match anything. I would also get a few patterned ties to wear on less important days. Good luck!

Go to Neiman Marcus.

They have probably every single color tie every created, patterned and solid.

They are a bit pricey, but hey, that's fashion.
