How concerned do I need to be about identity theft? It was just my birth certificate. If this is a big problem, what do I do now to protect myself?

First off, a birth certificate doe NOT have a person's social security number on it so getting a new identy might be difficult.... most places (including passport applications) require 2 or 3 forms of ID as proof of who a person is. A birth certificate only proofs someone was BORN... all YOU need to do is acquire another birth certificate.. what I would SUGGEST is when you DO go get a new one, get SEVERAL copies (about $10-$20 EACH) at the town or city hall in the town or city you were BORN IN... Each copy will have an embossed SEAL on it and this document with that seal can be used for ANYTHING requiring a birth certificate... I suppose a really crafty person could use YOUR stolen certificate for proof of SOMETHING, but without also having your social security NUMBER, identify theft would be nearly impossible....at least based SOLELY on the use of your birth certificate... oh and do not keep ALL the copies of your birth certificate in one place UNLESS you have a locked storage container for your important papers....

I have had to secure copies of MY birth certificate and that of my son when we went to get passports several years ago and then I had to get another copy of mine recently to GIVE to the social security department to apply for benefits...and each time I had to go to the town hall (TOWN CLERKS OFFICE) in the town the hospital is in where I was BORN)... you can also receive them by mail but you must send the required amt of money to pay for each certificate before they will mail any out to you.

You notify everyone you can think of, including the Social Security administration, who may be able to detain someone trying to use your birth certificate to get a new SSAN. If you still live in the same state as your birth, you should notify the Bureau of Vital Statistics and the Department of Transportation, or whoever issues drivers licenses in the state. On your existing credit accounts, you should advise that your address as it exists is still current, and someone may make applications from a different address criminally.

You need to get a new one.

With your BC someone can get all new ID, credit cards, etc. They can steal your whole identity.
