21 Jul, 2007, 1716 hrs IST, AGENCIES

NEW DELHI: Pratibha Patil has won the race to become Indian president, the election commission announced Saturday, becoming the first woman to hold the post in a symbolic victory for the hundreds of millions of Indian women who contend with widespread discrimination.

Patil, the 72-year-old candidate of the governing Congress party and its political allies, defeated the candidate of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, the incumbent Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, in the vote by national lawmakers and state legislators.

Patil received nearly two thirds of the vote, the commission said.

Fifty days before I made in yahoo Q&A guess/prediction/possibility that Hon.Prathipa Patel will be the next President of India. It has become true and correct.
100% guess work, 100% correct predictions.
But I am not an astrologer!!!
She as the President of India can forward your ideas to the Prime Minister regarding helping the average Indian and the NRI's living outside India.
The Prime Minister is the person who can take the policy decision. The Prime Minister will consult the Honourable President of India and the council of Ministers and take a decision suitable as majority of the Ministers/MP's/MLA's wishes.

Yes, the new president is a 'she' and her name is Ms. Patil. It is only a ceremonial post and unlike her predecessor, her influence and impact on the nation may be far from effective!
