1. Why do males open car doors for females?
Horse carriages back then were high and the doors were small. The roads were made of dirt. So, males offered to open the door while holding out his other hand to make it as a post. Then the female will hold her large prom like skirt while supporting herself on the arm post. Then she fixes her skirt in the carriage while the door shuts. If she did it on her own, it may of tripped, got dirty and obtain the skirt between the door. Today, if a man opens a car door for a female without any needs, he is not consider a gentleman. Only if they have a reason for help, elder, skirt etc.
2. Why open regular doors for females?
Same concept back then, the skirt to large. There is a reason and a guy offers to open and close it while she holds and fixes her skirt her way through.
3. Why push in/ pull out chairs for females at tables?
If they tried on their own, they would struggle getting themselves in and the skirt will get caught in the legs...

Today, people are getting more stupid, lazy and ignorant.
Ever learning but never knowing the Truth.
How much stupid stuff can you learn from the internet that serves no purpose except to 'satisfy your courisoty' for the moment?
We are heading toward difficult times...

True men did these things in the past to be gentlemen, but I have yet to see many men do that now. Perhaps tradition is the main reason we still do these things today. Tradition is hard to break. I Don't think the reason was because women wore large skirts. It's a good excuse, but highly unlikely. I think men would do these things because women were considered the weaker sex, and it was the man's responsibility to make sure nothing happened to the woman.

What is so wrong with common courtesy? Skirts? Come on now. If a man is standing at a door that someone is approaching, should it really matter whether that person is male or female?

-I try to be helpful in public regardless of a person's gender.
-I always thank people who are courteous to me as well.
-Some people still are respectful and helpful today, just as in the past. I don't think this generation is particularly worse than any other generation. In the 1960's the youthful generation were thought of as aliens. Some ideas don't change much from generation to generation, some people always say the next generation is the end of society as we know it. .

I like that, I like chivalry in a gentleman. Sadly Feminists have scared a lot of men these days and keep them from being chivalrous. It's sad.

Well, even though the trappings have changed, we're still very much in a patriarchal society that believes that women are weaker, less capable, and easily tainted. So old habits die hard.

All practices have their origins in the past. Do we keep them? Up to the individual. I hold the door open for men and women out of simple consideration. Do I expect men to do it for me? I expect anyone to do it for me if that's what they want to do. Nobody is forced to carry on practices rooted in the days of chivalry. Why is holding a door for a woman such a contentious issue for men? It's as if this is the sole basis for getting rid of feminism. I don't care either way--do it, don't do it. There are more important things to worry about--like say, that women are missing all over the world, girl infants are being buried alive because they're not wanted, women are being tortured, raped, and abused by both strangers and family members, women don't earn as much as men, women are predominantly the sole supports in single parent families.... and so on. Whether you hold open the door for a woman is irrelevant to me, and to the women's movement, quite frankly. But I will tell you one thing, from my experience--the men who are most supportive of women's issues in my world do hold the door open because they respect what I and the movement stands for. That's their prerogative, and I do appreciate it. It does not have the same connotation as it did in the 1700s, and it is not something forced on anyone. It is something PEOPLE do out of simple respect.

So what you're saying is that all of these chivalrous practices are based on the fact that we once had to wear big puffy skirts?
That makes me appreciate my jeans even more.
