the shifter in my manual tranny went out,now what?

I drive a five speed and the shifter went out on me,i was driving and noticed that the shifter was going up and down freely while still pretty firm back and forth.Then when i was at a stop sign it just didn't work anymore,the clutch was still working though and the pressure on the pedal felt about the same.
shift linkage cable? shifter cable? shift selector? what happened and how much will it cost me?

Depends on the car if it has a tower then possibly the pin came out or the cone unscrew. Take the rubber boot off the shifter an see what came loose might be a easy fix?
