Get out a recent World Atlas and take a look. Even without the satelite soviet nations, Russia is huge. When the Soviet Union basically broke up, the newly independent states were mostly very small.

Wikipedia says:
Soviet Union 22,402,200 sq.km.
Russia, 17,075,400 sq. km.
South America 17,840,000 sq.km.
USA 9,631,420 sq.km.
Vatican 0.44 sq.km.
Russia is bigger than Vatican City.
However, I was not aware that people were saying that Russia was bigger than South America. Maybe there are still old dictionaries out there with wrong figures.
