They are NOT the same processors, check the Intel website if you don't believe me. They are available for both desktops and laptops, please just use desktops to answer this question. Pentium Dual-Core's are not listed in Tom's Hardware for comparison, but Pentium D's are.

Dual core IS Pentium D. Dual Core 2 is a DUAL core. http://www.intel.com/design/pentium_dual-core/documentation.htm
The "new" dual core is a renamed cpu (E2000). Basically a crappy low grade Core2 cpu. Get a Core2 instead.

The reason is Pentium Dual-Core's are NOT OUT yet. The Pentium DC's are 65 nm LGA775 processors. Pentium D's are 90 nm LGA775 processors.

Core 2 Duos and Core 2 Solos are 65 nm LGA775 processors as well, but in a slightly different packaging. The CPU die area seems to be much smaller.
