They normally sleep during the day, although not always. Raccoons can actually be seen meandering around during the daylight hours as well. (This is not, as most people assume, a sign of rabies. Perfectly healthy raccoons sometimes take a daylight stroll.) When not actively raiding your garbage, they are probably lazing about on a tree limb, or in a hollow tree, or in a woodpile, or in a culvert. The places they find to hide from humans and other predators are extremely diverse.
If you want to deter them from rummaging through your garbage, keep your trash cans in your garage or a shed, or invest in raccoon-proof receptacles. And spray ammonia on the trash cans, and in the general area you do not want the raccoons in.

Raccoons prefer dark cool places in summer. They usually prefer a hole in a tree, they seems to like being up away from the ground. Also the intersection of limbs with the main truck.
Otherwise, just about anywhere. Culverts, abandoned houses and stores, junked cars, junk yards, city sewers, a locale park, etc etc. Raccoon does not need a lot of space, it's favorite sleeping position is in a ball. It is amazing just how small a hole they will get in to.
There is usually two times a year when you may see a raccoon out in daylight. The mating season and the fall movement season. Gonna be almost impossible to see one out a day in a city or rural area. They are secretive, a dog chasing one blows its cover.

Raccoons prefer to make their dens in hollows in standing trees—but have also been known to use underground burrows. Their adaptability to the loss of habitat brought on by human development has led them to use abandoned buildings and vehicles as denning sites as well. An ideal site is one that is near a year round running water source. Although raccoons are—primarily—active after nightfall, they have been known to have periods of activity during the day as well, particularly in coastal areas or areas with little human presence.
Raccoons are omnivores and their diet includes frogs, crayfish, fish, birds, eggs, fruits, nuts, grains, small mammals and insects.
Keeping a raccoon is illegal in many areas. They can't go back to wild living once being used to the pet life!
The two illnesses most commonly associated with raccoons are distemper and rabies. Both are potentially fatal. Raccoons are the normal host for the parasitic roundworm (Baylisascaris procyonis). Raccoons are not—technically—nocturnal; but, if you see one during the day, especially in or near a populated area, there may be cause for concern. Call a wildlife rehab professional if you suspect rabies or distemper. Do NOT call animal control.

Raccoons are nocturnal & spend their days sleeping in hollow trees - logs or just a "V" in some branches (they prefer to be off the grond, but willsleep in any dark spot if not threatened).
If your question is how to keep them out of your garbage, I wouild suggest a bin to keep the cans from tipping over & a bungee cord to hold the lids on. An electric fence around your cans would work allso.

Several good answers already so I will just remark on the salt issue. All that salting will do is keep the hide from rotting and turning rancid while waiting to tan it. After the salt is removed you can stretch the hide and allow it to dry but that also is not tanning that is just making rawhide.

I think they hide in Dens simular to foxes and kinda camp out. I suppose they have figured out the functioning times of humans such as yourself when it is quiet and when you are there. They probably feel safer hidden or they are just clever vandals!
