So I have a tree out back and because of it half of my yard is dirt. Laid the appropriate seed, fertilizer, and watered it every day. The grass just isn't going to happen. The problem is this patch of dirt and yellow grass is just off the patio and stretches in all the way across (small yard). you have to walk through it to get to the rest of the yard. No going around. So i need some ideas to make it look nice but still be okay for me and the dogs and the baby to walk through. Any idea would be appreciated.

Try putting in flagstones, or some type of pavers, to walk on. To eliminate the yellow grass, add about an inch of composted cow manure to the soil, and water it. Your tree may need to be trimmed out to allow some sunshine into the shaded area, for grass. Remember the rule of not to remove more then a third of the shade, or you will harm the tree.

you will desire to placed some shade seed out in the fall so by spring, there is a few in the floor already. Then in the early spring, previously there are leaves on the tree, thats the time to get it going. in case you wait until eventually summer while the leaves are up, the seedlings won't get sufficient gentle to enhance stable roots. it might desire to be that your soil is poisonous from previous chemical substances and/or debris, if thats the case, removing of dirt is the only answer.

If you don't want to trim your tree you could extend your patio, build a deck, or make a garden of plants that thrive in full shade with a walkway to the sunny part of your yard where the lawn is.

Try getting someone to trim the tree and thin out the branches. That may let some sunlight in and allow the grass to grow. At least they could raise the umbrella and that may let in more sunlight.

I agree with the first person about the flagstones or gravel walk way. also you can plant a fescue grass like,Creeping red fescue, Chewing's fescue, sheep fescue and hard fescue. all of which grow well in shaded areas.

you could try to raise the crown of the tree by cutting the lower branches off. this will allow more sunlight in your garden.other than that you can chop it down. best of luck.
