I know theyre cheap and tapes are getting obsolete, but if they can get everything else right, why tapedeck so ****? Is it cos its got moving parts? Are they really assembled in the jungle and if a twig from the tree falls on the wiring diagram they think it is part of the diagram?

Goodmans kit is rubbish - full stop.

Their amps are feeble (I've no idea where you get the idea that they are powerful. Ignore the manufacturers specs - Goodmans always over-rate their own stuff), their build quality is appalling and they fall apart after a few months.

Goodmans is one of the lowest rated U.K. makers of TV and sound systems, down there with the stuff from Taiwan and Malaysia. But there are always people who prefer low price over quality...
