If a couple are married and don't want more children a man would have a vasectomy so that they don't have to worry about contraception and there is no risk of getting pregnant. As far as I know there are no health benefits.

My thoughts on vasectomies:

There are no concrete health benefits. In fact a vasectomy is probably safer, by a long shot, than getting a tattoo. It is certainly not a radical surgery. It is almost painless, leaves no scar, and takes about 15 min.

The benefits are purely psychological. I think it represents a commitment to not having children, or not having more children. It carries a lot of novelty, even 20 years later. It also puts to rest any fear of getting someone pregnant. I can tell you, from experience, putting to rest, the fear of pregnancy, will improve your sex life a lot.

A vasectomy is a really "dirt cheap" methoid of birth control. I got mine when I was 21 so it cost me about a dolllar a month, over the years. You can't beat the price.

Another thing to consider is the fact that female birth control pills are a major health risk for the women.

My thoughts on condoms:

For many men, using a condom is not considered a good option. Condoms don’t bother me at all. I have used condoms most of my life even though I had a vasectomy. I always use them with a new partner.

Many women, I have dated asked me not to use one because they don’t like how a condom feels. I can tell you with experience, that the quality condoms feel just the same as not using one at all. The cheap ones, from India, and China are somewhat uncomfortable.

But, I am 41, so I have been having sex for around 25 years. I pretty much know my body, and know were my strengths and weaknesses are. I have no ego, impatience, or fears of inadequacy to deal with. I can put a condom on left handed in the dark, in a matter of about two seconds.

Younger men have less sexual experience. How could such a man know his body well enough to know what feels best, and what does not. He still has a “male ego”, and fears of inadequacy to deal with. He is more likely to consider a condom a threat to his manhood. He is also going to be so excited, that the extra second it takes to put on a condom, is like an eternity. He is more likely to tear one or two condoms, and then become frustrated.

To start with, "safe sex" is a little bit of a misnomer. A better term is "safer sex", since there is no method of contraception that is 100% proof against pregnancy (or STD).
If a man decides he does not want to have children (or any more children), getting a vasectomy is the most sure fire way to make sure that doesn't happen. Even still there is an extremely small rate of failure (which can be further reduced by follow-up appointments to get your sperm count checked).
A lot of couples do not want to mess with the inconvenience (and the very different feel) of condoms, and birth control pills can have unpleasant side effects in some women.
The vasectomy is a very simple, very quick, extremely low risk, and nearly pain-free solution.

I had my vasectomy in March of '77. We never had to worry about WILL THE PILL WORK? DO WE HAVE A CONDOM? Having a vasectomy means you never have to say YOU'RE WHAT?!
The only TRUE safe sex (without a tubal ligation on a woman or a vasectomy on a man) is NO SEX.
Since my wife and I have had no other sex partners since we've been married, we don't have to worry about that 'safe sex' crap either.
By me having a vasectomy, we can make love anytime and any place (we've been banned from Safeway)..he he..j/k.
By the way, I'm 60 and still having a ball in the sex department, the toy department, the sporting goods department...

When a person goes only for safe sex and known partner he can go for vasectomy and it makes pregnancy impossible,still there is full enjoyment.Sex with out any condom is the most pleasureful experience..Woman also needs no protective device or pills.So full and free sex you can enjoy with out fear.Vasectomy is taken by men who are married and have enough number of children and want to confine sex with wife only.Vasectomy can be reversed and surgery is very simple and doesnot require long
hospitalisation.
Condoms are still required if the man chooses un known partners.

You seem to be getting safe sex & contraception mixed up. A vesectomy is a form of birth control which many long term partners under go. Long term partners do not feel the need to practise safe sex, what they do need especially if they have children is contraception. Many couples reach a point where they do not wish to add to their family & in some cases a vesectomy is the only form of birth control that is suitable for them.
It is not a procedure that is taken lightly & it has to be thought through with great depth.

If you are in a stable long term relationship, have children and dont want any more then the vasectomy is the way to go.
No need for the female to be on the pill forevermore, no need for condoms as this is a long term relationship/marriage.
Condoms kill the moment somewhat.......a must for new partners etc but why if you dont need to!
Also you can still fall pregnant on the pill or with condoms (accidents happen!)

It's possibly the most reliable form of contraception. Sounds good to me.

There should be a lot more vasectomies happening, it would make a great threat for someone who was too lazy to get a job. 'Stop claiming dole or we'll give you a vastectomy'. That would sort out who was genuinely ill from the ones who suddenly developed the ability to run a mile in four minutes...

As a man looking to get a vasectomy sometime in the next year or so, I'll take a swing at this.

If a man is sure he doesn't want any (more) children, it can be a tremendous convenience for his love-life. You don't have to worry about contraception: forgetting, running out, or whatever. Besides, all forms of birth control are still fallible.

Granted, I would only recommend it for someone in a monogamous and long-term relationship, since vasectomies don't help against STDs.

Safe sex for men usually means getting a woman to use a pill, which risks her health, a coil which makes her bleed or bloat, or getting sterilised which has a mortality ( death risk!) and a definite morbidity, ( pelvic pain, period problems and increased need for hysterectomy).

Compare that to a 20 minute op under local anaesthetic. Are you a man or a mouse? You certainly have little respect for women!
