In a word - economics. The real estate where AstroWorld used to sit became more valuable to use for other purposes, so the owners sold the land and the new owners of the property tore down the amusement park and are developing the property for other purposes (residential & retail).

My wife and I went there on the last day it was open. We were there to see the gates open one last time. A lot of nostalgic types were doing the same.
Astroworld had faded, and the many coats of paint couldn't hide the fact that the park had seen better decades. The rides were old and second-rate, everything looked a little grimy, and the crowds got ruder as the day went on.
You see, the park was a victim of its own practices: the annual pass. Parents used to buy this pass for their kids and use it for a babysitter... dropping little Jimmy and Susie off in front and picking them up later. Gangs used to use the same pass to hang out, and a number of fights ensued over whose turf it was. It isn't hard to smuggle a knife in your shoe when all your bling sets off a metal detector. That being said, the season pass cost about as much as two days admittance. So, the park jacks up their admission price for single day tickets so the casual visitor never comes. The number of season pass holders starts to drop because of boredom, and the park is doomed.
Lastly, location. The Astrodomain is just north of some rather ratty slum areas (remember the gangbangers above). Security wasn't that good and people didn't like having their cars broken into.
I don't know what Astroworld will eventually turn into. The claim was "dense urban development" which is a buzzword for condos and local shops that looks like Sugarland's Town Center near their city hall, but the neighborhood is too rundown for that. My guess is that will be where the soccer stadium for the Houston Cowards (the team too chicken to keep the name "1836") will end up.

Astoworld closed because of a dispute over parking with the Reliant Stadium, with whom they shared the parking lot.
Stupid? Yes, but rather than buy more land and build their own parking, Six Flags closed Astroworld...I had heard that they were going to rebuild somewhere else, but that was just word of mouth...I didn't read that anywhere.

Yes! :( It closed down ....they sold the property because it's worth more than what they were making from people visiting.

Money! They were going to make so much money selling the land and it didn't make sense keeping the doors open.

Me too. But it became old and ugly. Too many kids were left there all day and it got dangerous, too. Remember Marvel McFay?

because it started getting really ghetto, people would go there to just start fights, and they were losing alot of money. they sold astroworld to splashtown.
