If you do an internet search of "knitting pattern" or "crochet pattern", you will find thousands of choices. Some sites I recommend are

You can try Mary Maxim or Annie's Attic. They're catalogs. Both have recently had the cutest crochet pattern for house slippers that look like sneakers, among many other things. Most of the yarn brands' websites have free patterns available. If you use Google and search for "knitting pattern free" or "crochet pattern free" you'll get tons of good sites. It's usually best, I've found, to type the noun first ("knitting pattern free" instead of "free knitting pattern") because then you mainly get what you're looking for, not all sorts of other 'free' stuff.

I don't know of downloading any catalogs for patterns but here's a few websites I've used that have nice patterns:
www.crochetpatterncentral.com
www.crochetnmore.com
www.crochetpatterncentral.com
www.crochetandknitting.com
www.lionbrand.com
www.allfreecrafts.com/crochet
www.allcrafts.net/crochetknit.htm#freeprojects
http://crochet.about.com
Some sites will have a spot to click on to order free catalogs. I've done that. Try googling Annie's Attic.
There's magazines in craft stores too. Crochet Today. There's so many others!
Good luck!
