Treat your employees like humans rather than work-monkeys. I have gone through job after job just because companies dont know how to treat their employees. If an employee feels wanted and you give him perks, and things too look forward to, they will stick around.

I am an employer. With respect to employees who take pride in their work, I let them know that they are important to my business.
If they go out of their way to get a rush job done, or put in extra work when we are short-staffed, I give them a bonus in their paycheck, to ensure they understand that their efforts have been appreciated and not just taken for granted.
If they suggest a change that will help them work more efficiently, I listen to their proposals and (providing these are realistic and will not increase someone else's workload), I will more than likely agree to their recommendations.
I will not tolerate an employee who tries to get others to do their work for them, but I do encourage staff members to help one another, especially if one of them is particularly overloaded at any given time while another may be completely caught up.
I will never tolerate any staff member who bullies another. This creates disharmony and disgruntlement.
And I don't ever give the impression that I am not working as hard as they are.
Believe me, good staff members are "golden" to a business and it is certainly not difficult to let them know their efforts are appreciated.
In return, they give me the dedication that is so important in a business.

I think one of the simple things you could do to motivate your employees to work well is to give them good working environment and facilities. You should be able to provide an office area conducive for working, i.e. good ventilation, good lighting. Also, you should be able to provide them with the facilities they need in order to carry out their responsibilities, such as their own personal computer, and other office supplies. Sounds simple enough but there are employers who would like to save on this expenses and thus deprive their employees on what they need. If you are able to provide these, you are giving your employees the message that you are willing to give them the necessary tools to enable them to work well. It also gives them the idea that you are a considerate boss. They would be motivated to work harder if they know that they are working for someone who understands their needs.
Also, it would be best if you would compensate them well - give them the salary that commensurates with the responsibilities given to them. That way, they won't feel that you have cheated them. Otherwise, they will get back to you when the opportunity knocks on their door. If they feel that you are the kind of employer who is fair and gives them what is due to them, they would think twice before cheating on you.
By giving these to them, you are gaining their loyalty to you. Consequently, they would work hard and also think of the welfare of the company.

Some workers are just there fo rrhe paycheck and will never have that attitude. Those with pride in themselves will take pride in their work too, when you get one of those, treat them right and you will keep them.
A lot of people don't know what "work" is all about and complain constantly about the boss's methods or ideas or choices. I try to explain it this way;
"Here is how it works, I offer you a job and you accept it. After that, I give you things to do and tell you how I want them to be done. You do them quickly and efficiently and I give you money every week. If you don't do them I stop giving you money every week."
Certainly discuss options and answer questions but it is your business and they are being paid to do a good job, treat them fairly and reward extra efforts but demand the work be done as you want it done.

Let them participate in some decision making. Ask their opinion on things about their work or their working environment. If they feel that they are important and their opinion counts it makes them feel one with the company thus would make them more dedicated. (but not too much participation though be careful)

Ask them.
Get them involved in the process and no doubt they will have a better idea. Like one poster wrote about being a work monkey, treat them better than that.
Read the story of Harley Davidson Motorcycles.

as a mgr for a restr. i often find no one is as dedicated as myself, but hey no big surprise there, they dont get paid what i do and since thats not possible i try to do things to encourage great workmanship, for instance
1.let them set their schedule, sounds crazy but when i let my people pick their days, they show up! when i just put anything down on the schedule, often they dont show for one reason or another, of course this only works when dealing with adults with bills and not teens whose folks pay their way....lol
2.when any server sells 10 specials on their shift we give them one for themselves to eat, and my people are always hungry and they love FREE food
3.steam cleaning the carpet and other big tasks, i give them a 25.00 gift cert. and they can use it whenever or give it to whoever they want, my cost is minimal and i get done what i need to be done
4.have monthly or bi monthly meetings and treat everyone as adults, always begin with compliments and praise before you start being critical, no one wants to feel attacked and unappreciated
5.have periodic get togethers for the staff, bbq at ones house or a park, or even before or after business hours depending on the type of bus.
6.offer days off or half days with full pay for really challenging individuals who need to know your good side, often you cant expect other people to treat your stuff like it were their own simply becuase its NOT theirs and they arent reaping the rewards that you are and human nature just makes some people go to work and get a paycheck while others feel they are getting a paycheck regardless of their performance......
good luck

employees need appreciation, know they are a part of a team, feel invested in the business. if you do not care about them, they wont care about you or the business. that is not to say you let them run the place, ultimately, it is your business. you just have to find the middle ground.
