How is it that, in this one area of our lives, we have convinced ourselves that our beliefs about the world can float entirely free of reason and evidence? Please no quotes from the bible or sermons required. Refrain from attacking me for asking this question.

No matter how much science advances, there are still unanswerable questions.
For instance: according to the current theory of lightning, a charge of more than 6 times the highest ever recorded in a cloud, is required for a lightning strike.
Some people say that blindly following science is ignoring all the evidence that God exists. I like to keep an open mind.

The real reason is that it is a metaphysical necessity. Thus, in
any universe whatsoever, there exists a ground of being.
Concisely, in a sequence of dependencies, the middle terms
do not pertain to being per se and are removeable from consideration without loss of generality. This gives you the
unmoved mover, uncaused cause, independant but
dependable, whatever you chose to call it.

Everybody wants to believe that once you die, there is something more. The fact that the majority of the people in the world believe in some sort of religion is why they all remain despite the lack of reason and evidence.

My take is: when man first experienced the forces of nature, his initial reaction was fear. By the time he learned to make food by cultivating crops he understood how the forces of nature help him cultivate it. He started worshiping that by offering thanks. He could not reason out what makes the forces and what forms them. You can see this trend in all older civilizations formed on the banks of rivers. But as money and trade started, things changed because of that and politics started playing its role. People with power and money started manipulating people who dont have them. There started everything. And we are facing those problems even now.

Because the whole idea of something as crazy as the world and the universe happening for no reason we can find is too much for some people.
