They used to have all feminine names but that was changed a number of years ago. It is now equal opportunity in the storm category.

The NHC (National Hurricane Center, a division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) Named Hurricanes feminine names from 1953 to 1979, then they added Men's names to the list. So no, there are masculine names indeed

They're alternately given alphabetical male and female names, once each letter of the alphabet has been used they're given the names of the Greek letters.
The first hurricane of 2005 was named Arlene, then Bret, Cindy, Dennis, Emily, Franklin etc. 2005 was a bad season for hurricanes and once the alphabet had been gone through the hurricanes were named Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta etc.

In the U.S., they have not used all female names since 1979:

Here are the names for the next 6 years:

The next one this year will be Chantal, as Andrea fizzled out, and Barry brought some much needed rain to FL and GA - neither reached hurricane status.

They are not all named after females any more.
A few years ago, the women's movement made an issue of that fact, so they now name some with male names.

They aren't! Where did you get that idea? They are about half boy-named and half girl-named!

They used to be but they aren't any more.
I think in the past it was representative of the destruction caused by the other actions of women.
