That would not be beneficial. Just as XP has it's problems so does 2000. In theory the problems in 2000 were fixed by the time XP was released.

you can replace xp with 2000
format your hard drive
and install 2000
or
boot your computer with the 2000 cd
and when you get the option to install 2000 for a particular drive
choose to install in the same drive as xp and choose to format it in the next step..

yes, you would have to reformat your hard drive, purchase windows 2000, install it, and go from there.
But why do you want to? XP is newer than 2000, so you would be downgrading, not upgrading.

No, to install 2K on an existing XP install (a "downgrade"), you would first have to format your hard drive. That would wipe out all of your data.
