My greatest words of wisdom came from my dad.
Rough times, whether they were monetary, emotional, etc were "character building". Oh boy, did I get some character building in my life. LOL
If I was upset and my feelings were hurt, he would ask me if it (whatever it was) was going to have an effect on the rest of my life. If not, get over it as it doesn't really matter. He was right, of course. I rarely get upset these days as a result. It takes too much effort, to be honest.
On vacation (camping because it was all we could afford), he taught me that there is always something to see and learn, even if was a place we had been before. I now make it a point to see something new, even if it's while I'm on the bus.
He also said that a good laugh even during darkest times, helps take the pain away. He was right about that one too. My sense of humor is one of my best survival skills. :)
The other words of wisdom come from my husband. He says that happiness is a choice. He's right about that too.
I could probably think of a lot more, but those are the words that I live by the most.

- A penny saved is a penny earned.
- Neither a borrower, nor a lender be.
- The early bird catches the worm.
- Never put off until tomorrow things you could do today.
- Just because there is snow on the roof, doesn't mean there isn't fire in the oven.

too many to list, but I listened, and eventually learned AFTER I had decided that I knew better, but didn't!
Mom: Don't count on anything you do not actually have. and, Believe everyone until they give you reason not to. Never loan money to anyone...give them the money, if you get it back, great. If you don't, at least you will not have lost a friend, and friends are more valuable than money.
Grandma: Phil, there will come a day when you will be so happy you are skinny. (I was skinny and hated myself, always trying to put on weight, never succeeded)...she was RIGHT!

Count each day as a separate life.
And on a more prosaic note,
Never go upstairs or downstairs empty-handed.
(another way of saying to put things back where they belong)

My great grandmother's favourite was 'do as you would be done by', her way of saying 'treat others as you wish them to treat you'. I've usually followed her example but there are often times nowadays when I think the opposite, and treat others as they treat me.

My mom said those same things. Also, people will like you just as much or even more if you don't let yourself be their doormat.
