It's time every nation practiced what we preach in Iraq. Secular government !
The one country in the whole world that has got it right, is Turkey. This, an Islamic country, keeps a lid on the power of religion. This is why and how the Turks have been able to maintain strong, secular government while the volatile Muslims are kept neutered.
Religion should never, ever have control of government. When religion takes control, it turns something beautiful into something hostile. Religion cannot be forced upon people, and if you're looking for internal strife and conflict, this is a sure fire way of achieving this goal.

It isn't. People are religious or not religious. Some vote for a politician for their beliefs. Politics and religion are two separate issues. Some politicians are religious and some are not. I may vote for someone whom believes in god or not. I also may vote for someone if the are a member of the NRA or not. I think a scarier question would be why are Governments overseas involved in religion. A secular government is the only way to raise a nation. Our founding fathers based this country on Judeo-Christian beliefs for the most part. Each meeting in preparing the Declaration of Independence began with a prayer. Some also smoked Cannabis before their meetings. The separation of church and state was originally intended to keep the government from hijacking religion much akin to what Iran has done. After-wards there final assessment was a "Secular Government", was the only way to allow freedom of speech and religion. A "Religious Leader" is not my top priority. One that can follow the basic fundamentals of our constitution is though. The minor intrusions of religion in public schools, Courthouses, and other government buildings is laughable. These instances where there is division amongst us is rooted in socialist and atheists attempting to relinquish the founding principle our government was founded upon. Why are atheist involved in politics then?

The oldest polticians were relgious heads. The religion and party was one and the same.Since the concept of socialism ,democracy came parties became different from relgions.Since joining a political party does not require discarding of religion(except in communisam),the religion continue to influence politics. In Russia and communist countries, religion has no role in politics(there is no religios freedom there).

LET'S HEAR IT FOR SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE!
The politicians can keep their religion in their back pocket! Give me an ethical man, any day of the week!
Most times, the politician yells his Christianity to the public, while he secretly does everything he is expounding against! Hypocrisy and Christian politicians are strange bedfellows!
An ethical says what he means, and means what he says! The Christian politician has a longer way to fall, and fall they do! Sooner or later!
So religion has no place in politics!

it didnt used to be that much, but since politicians have become mor liars, and dont serve the people but themselves,
where religion tries to serve truth and people, (i dont mean false religion) are nation has been brought to an all time low, even our judges have legalised things that was originaly crimes, and have thrown away the protection of cencorship so the power of evil can have a free range at corrupting the hearts and minds of the people. politics has failed.

Because politicians use religion in counties/states where there is a very large abundance of religious people, like in Oklahoma and Texas so they'll get elected
