tick gets louder when accelerating, over 145,000 miles, has had regular maintenance since purchase, when oil light came on then went out, checked oil-it was empty, put in 3 qrt. and STP oil treatment, ticking has not ceased, seems to be getting worse,,what could this be, and what further damage can occur if it doesnt get better?trying to avoid that pricey computer diagnostic test,or is that even possible?

hi ... you may have worn tappets as they are clled in england hence the ticking noise...
you have no option but to get it looked at its not a computer diagnostic thing its an engine fault..... these are at the top of the engine ... lift the hood and listen to the engine .. does it sound like the noise is coming from the valve cover... or lower in the engine...

Wouldn't it make more sense to check the oil more often then to worry about the damage you've done to the engine?
