I am a devoted Catholic, and I attend mass every week and participate in my parish.

I also adore the Harry Potter books, and our parish priest often refers to quotes from the movies or books on the theme of love and friendship, as that is ultimately what the series is about: the power of LOVE.

Which is, of course, a major part of the Christian faith: "love thy neighbour", and all that.

Though they have the best intentions, your parents are daft! Are you a member of a church? Go ask the Pastor. He might be a crazy, but he might just be a real Christian. If Christ was here, he'd let you read Harry Potter. Harry Potter books are just really good childrens story books. They are fantasy books - purely for entertainment. And they don't need lots of discussion about christian values or anything. You are far more likely to be corrupted by listening to politicians or adverts for McDonalds! Don't believe mexican. He's a liar. Actually, it's probably a good idea to ask your parents why. Don't argue with them, just listen to what they say. Let them do all the talking. Maybe they will talk themselves into letting you read the books.

The Harry Potter Series are just fictions and are not describing or portraying the fact how the world is. Also the Key point to be understood from religion whether Christianity, Islam or Hinduism is that all of them speaks one language. The language of Love.
In all the Harry Potter series there is the Message of Love & Friendship. Also keep in mind to neglect what is required and take the good in it.Harry Potter is just a character that is mind made. So keep it that way.

Look at it this way: If your belief in God can be shaken so easily by what you read, then you're not a very devout Christian to start with, so there's no loss there, aye?

Don't ask us what God would approve and would not approve, we're not Him. And neither is anyone. None of the people in your lives, not even the priest at church is capable of answering that question cause we're all not God.

As far as I know, all my Christian friends have read it and they haven't been smited yet, so I'm guessing God doesn't mind Harry Potter that much.

As long as they know it's fiction, there's no problem is there? When the first book came out we had to read it at school and one child (Jehova's witness) was prohibitted to do so. It was reall difficult for her to take part in lessons because she didn't know what was going on in class discussions, she couldn't write book reviews and she missed out a lot. I don't think the Harry Potter books are offensive to the Christian faith and, if you ask most priests, I am sure they would agree. Otherwise there would have been a big debate.

Of course, it's a great read! Anything that gets kids reading is a plus..
If the conservative cults feel threatened by "witchcraft" (their word, not mine) in this day and age, then there is no hope for them!
Notice how carefully JKR avoids any mention of Halloween (which lots of 'christian' kids celebrate by the way) but they always celebrate the real Christmas at Howarts, that is to say food, food and more food!

Read and enjoy!

How does anyone know that a God which may or may not exist would or wouldn't approve of a purely fictional book? Who does it hurt, honestly? What does religion even have to do with it?

If someone is really going to be so puritanical, and not just stubbornly difficult, the first thing they should have nothing to do with is filthy money. But of course that would be inconvenient so instead they can pick something of no consequence to find issue with.

They are fiction books. If the child's faith in God is real then reading a book wont make them stray. You cant just sensor everything.

Well, I guess if you're one of those people that believes all things come from God, then God gave the inspiration to JK Rowling so that she could write the book. If this is true, then why wouldn't he want all his children to read the book.
