Mind you that i am searching for in-depth books and please dont post any best of amazon lists. I'd like to know by people's experiences.

oh, forgive the mistake, i wish to learn about adult titles, meaning by that not children-introduction-to's and so on.

"The Elegant Universe" seems like the answer to your question. I have read a couple chapters of the book, and it contains a very descriptive view of the universe. There is a site dedicated to the book on my source.

Well. the answer to all this is available online itself. If you seach in yahoo itself all the answers are there.
For my own choices I would prefer you to go for Patrick Moore books. He is one of the best in this field.
To be sincere with you, the fact is that since Astronomy is a very exhaustive and developing field, please check everything online for references as I have seen that the books at times can be outdated.

For field work, Burnham's Celestial Handbook in 3 volumes.

"Stars" by James Kaler is my favorite

"Our Cosmic Habitat" by Martin Rees is another great one.

This book is by Carl Sagan...very very good
to tell you the truth, I would vouch for any of his books.
