Why do computers sometimes reset the date and time? Mine has done it 3 times so far this year, (always to the same date in August 2002), and I've had to go into the Setup to reset them, but I'm wondering if there's an underlying reason for it? Can someone with more computer-intelligence than me explain what's going on please?

Your PC can no longer store CMOS data because the CMOS battery is dead. Just replace it. It is a CR2032 lithium battery that looks like a silver coin. Oftentimes, even camera stores have them on stock. It usually costs less than a dollar. Be sure PC is unplugged when you replace the battery.

You have a flat CMOS battery on the motherboard, it is round in shape and is just like the batteries that are used in watches etc but bigger in size, the purpose of the CMOS battery is to keep the date/time correct, and to keep the CMOS/BIOS settings stored on the BIOS chip, you may have heard people removing the battery to clear the CMOS/BIOS settings, when this done the settings revert back to the default settings and therefore the date and time go back to for example 2002 which you are seeying in your case, so basically there nothing to worry about all you need is a new battery of the same type etc, a good PC store should be able to supply you with one and fit it for very little money, hope this helps.

If the computer has been disconnected from the mains for a period of time when it does this then the battery on the motherboard may be getting discharged. This would cause the symptoms you explained.

The reason it will default to the same date is due to the date of manufacture. Your BIOS (Basic Input Output System) chip contains some flash memory so when the battery discharges on the motherboard the only source for date and time is the BIOS chip, and that only has the date it was made.
