Prior to 1971 and the decimalisation of money, counting up money was a little more difficult,as you had pounds, shillings and pence,so here's a problem. If you went into a shop and bought 4 items costing:
£1 15s 3d
£2 12s 6d
£2 18s 8d
£1 13s 7d
and you paid with a £10 note, how much change would you get back?
Say whether you're under/over 40,and how long it took you to calculate the answer.Iwould expect the over 40's to be quicker as they would once have done this.
PS. There were few if any calculators back then,so many shopkeepers did these calculations in their heads!

a quid - took about 40secs to a minute,... over 40, just mental arithmetic, didn't even use my fingers. Added the pence up first (2 bob) then the pounds, then the shillings.

£1-00d - over 40 - a couple of minutes with pen and paper but I did find it strange adding up those shillings and pennies and dividing by 20 (shillings in a pound) and 12 (pennies - not pence - in a shilling).
