I have an assembled desktop, with an intel pentium D processor and an intel D945Gnt motherboard. I got my motherboard replaced same days ago... it had an unusual problem so Intel obliged and replaced it in a week. So when I got it back, I reintegrated the whole system, and now there's a new problem:
When I press the power button, the CPU fan and smps fan starting to rotate, the led's in the keyboard light up... and just after a 2-3 seconds everything shuts down! The smps fan switches off, even though the led on the motherboard is on... the monitor shows no output for those 3 seconds.
Well, i have checked the smps and RAM on another comp, they r working fine... so where does the problem lie? motherboard or processor?? or something else? .. i even checked for short circuiting by running it without the chassis....

Please Help!

Ok this is my best guess....

Check the Heatsink of the processor and make sure it lies flat on the processor and there are no gaps between the two. The reason it shuts down is to prevent the processor from overheating. And CPU's do reach 100+ degrees within a couple of seconds. So thats my best guess.... try it. it could be that.

Try the first suggestion; better if you replaced the thermal paste. Make sure the heatsink does not touch any other electronic component except the processor case. Reseat the processor fan connector.
If problem persists try the bare minimum set up. Disconnect HDD, FDD, CD drive. Use only one RAM stick. Integrated graphics only if available and nothing on PCI slots and USB ports. With this set up, you should be able to go to BIOS menu. Reconnect the devices one at a time. The one that brings back the problem is the defective device.

First remove your processor, and reset it on that stand, once again you will check smps, and ram cards. Remove once and reassemble them. I think processor is the main problem. Try this and you will get it. Even the single pin was bend in your processor means it's unable to work. Handle with care. Best of luck

Sounds like you have checked everything except the graphics card ? if you have onboard graphics do you have access to a seperate graphics card suitable for your system ie AGP or Pci /pci express this could be the problems anyway check out that area first before progressing and if it all goes pear shaped contact intel as it was ok before they got hold of it.
