The maximum punishable time depends on the statutes for where you live. Since you're talking value in pounds, I'm assuming you're in the U.K., so I can't say for certain how it works over there, but in the U.S., every city, municipality, and state has their own rules or codes, which spells out what a person has to have done in order to be charged with a specific crime, and then what the minimum and maximum punishments are for those crimes. The judges don't just make it up as they go along. They have a window of discretion, but they can't just sentence you to life in prison for a speeding ticket just because they didn't get their latte on time that morning.

I think he has very good chances of going to jail; he has credit card fraud, identity theaft, the use of the postal service for illegal activites, plus scam, and of course the stolen property; if he used the credit cards and the mail for the three crimes then he is in more troubles.

First time offender or not, credid card fraud, is a very serious offence punished as hard as breaking into a bank at night. The same goes for the use of the postal service.

it depends what court you go to, some might tell you to give all the things back and sentence you to however many hours of community service, or you might have a few days to a couple of years in prison, go to a really good and expensive lawyer.

Depends if they need to make an example of somebody that week......most of the time restitution an a fine, paid all at once....will bring it to an end. Otherwise, probation, and if you dont pay, do the time......

Good as it is considered conversion and fraud for starters, in addition to identity theft, which is a federal crime.
