i don't think anyone knows who are the homeless people, about 40% are veterins 15% are children some are vitims of abuse or other violence and most if not all are hadicaped either physically or mentally. How many of you have every been without food for a lenth of time? How would you like to not know where your going to sleep? If you are lucky enough to even get a bed in a shelter you better sleep with one eye open and make sure you tie your shoes on really tight, they wont be there in the morning otherwise. Have any of you ever tried to get a job without a phone that in itself is not easy, not to mention where you would bath before work.
Judgement of another is not anyones place if someone asks for money give it to them if you can. For those of you think they are faking how easy is it to stand outside and beg, I would assume it is not nearly as profitable as you think and why would anyone choose to do that. I am surprised how many people don't understand the pressures and suffering someone goes throgh that doesn't have the comfort of a home. Alcohol may be used by some as a form of self medicating because they can not afford to get proper help, and it is physically addictive and if they have become dependent could have serious withdrawl problems.
I don't think anyone would choose to be homeless and definatly no one deserves it, with such a hole to have to dig out from I would only not give if asked. Sometimes I give without being asked and you should see how happy you can make someone for only two dollars. I think it is everyones duty to help out another regaurdless of how you think they are, judgement is not anyones place. Remeber you will be blessed for helping someone and for the sake of humanity help each other out. Are people really that cheap that they can't give two dollars to a veterin or abuse victin or a person suffering from another illness? This is not too much to ask or give to ease and give comfort to another human being.

If they are doing nothing to try and better themselves, but are content with living life mooching off of people, not looking for work, expecting hand outs, and just down right lazy, then those are the ones that I have no sympathy for!
But if someone has just lost a job, and somehow maybe they ended up losing their home, maybe they have no family/friends, and they become homeless, and they're bending over backward to better themselves, and get back to living a normal life, with a job, and a home, and so on, and they can't seem to get nowhere, then those are the ones that I want to help, that I really feel sorry for, especially if they have kids!

not all homeless people have chosen that way of life... it has been handed to them by our cruel society. I believe we should help where we can, especially during the cold winter months when so many die from the cold. can you imagine sleeping under a bridge in 20 degree weather? It can't be fun.I think we should open more shelters for the truely homeless and offer them blankets and warm clothing, maybe even some hot meals. don't give them money, but give them necessities to survive.

I work in the city and see the homeless everyday. I know some by first name. I think that we need to find a way to help them help themselves. I see them bounce from churches and soup kitchens to various other places to look for help. But I question whether or not they really want to help themselves. I think that many would rather just have a hand out. I'm not being arrogant about this. I think that it is very sad. I also feel that the welfare system has degraded our society. I think that we were created to do many things. One of them is to work, and if we don't work for what we have, we run into all sorts of problems.

I believe that some (the minority) do choose it as a way of life.
Mostly, i think its terrible that in this country there are still homeless people when illegal immigrants are given housing.
it must be awful to be stuck in the trap of no job=no house=no job.
There should be a system in place where these people are offered a second chance.

I used to feel sorry for them in a way, but one day I saw a scruffily-dressed man, obviously homeless, sitting against a wall begging for money.
I went to a nearby fish-and-ship shop, bought him a portion of both and gave them to him, sat down beside him and asked if there was anything I could do for him, like contacting the local authority etc. to house him.
But he refused, saying that he did not want to be placed in a home where he had to go to bed at a certain time, get up at a certain time and eat what they gave him - at certain times.
He wanted to be free and wanted to spend his benefit money how he wanted to, not have it taken away and be beholden to others for food and bed.
I got up and left, disgusted. As far as I was concerned he was responsible for his own destiny and any mess he had got himself into.
He was just an idle layabout and did not deserve sympathy of any sort.
To hell with them all.

Those families who have no house to stay, house of their own. Not all homeless people are indigent who need help. There are homeless people who are renting a house for them to live because they refuse to have a house and prefer to rent. Indigent people needed help. We should pity them and help them if you have the means, especially financial means.

They choose to be homeless.
All British local authorities are bound by law to find accomodation for applicants.
Helping these people actively encourages this behaviour and the crime ,disease,anti-social behaviour, alcoholism and drugs abuse associated with it.
Every person should be responsible for themselves.Every homless person is a burden upon everyone else, including charities,NHS,police and the counciltax payers involuntarily funding support groups.
I am not without compassion, however,my compassion is restricted to people of genuine misfortune, loss and illness.
Every penny donated to the homeless is a penny lost to the British Legion , seamans mission, cancer research, disabled charities.

I have never felt I needed to have a view about them. Some of them are crazy, some of them probably deserve it, some of them probably had something traumatic happen to them. I can look in their eyes and see pain though and since I to know what it is like to suffer ofcourse I would like to do more.

People should definitly do more to help them. It breaks my heart to see people with no home and no place to keep warm in the winter. Even more so if the homless person is a child.
