Launching isnt that terrible, I drive my car quite vigorously. Havent destroyed anything yet. I am sure the clutch will wear out quicker, but sports cars are for the most part intended to launch from a stop. If you want to drive your car like a maniac, which I do, you need to be prepared for things to break. Now in an Automatic, I would launch between 2,000-3,000 rpm. Any higher and you might start roasting the tires, unless its a front wheel drive. You need to hold the normal break, not the E-brake, if your car is front wheel drive pulling the E-brake can make for some good burnouts. Now Neutral slams are TERRIBLE on your car, that is just asking for the planetary gears to explode. You will find that automatics, unless they are taken to a specialist and rebuilt for high performance applications, wont last as long as a manual when it comes to launching or driving hard. The clutch packs will wear out, the valve bodies will wear out. In a manual as long as you use the clutch properly you wont fry the sychros, and all that you have to worry about is the clutch itself going out, which is ALOT cheaper to replace than rebuilding an automatic.

And if launching from 2-3K doesnt seem to work well, feel free to experiment. Use higher and lower rpm to see what works best. But if you have over 100,000 miles on your transmission, you are asking for trouble. It is old and probably needs to be babied. I would definately check and replace the trans fluid and filter. And if you drive you car like I do, I would shorten the recommended service intervals.

Do not launch your car by dropping it into drive from neutral! You will destroy your trans doing that!!

You are correct: You hold down the brake while in drive and rev up your RPMs. As for a specific RPM it depends on your car. When I used to take my car to the track I would rev up to 2500 RPM. I recommend you get a feel for how your braking feels; if it feels like your brakes aren't holding your car then adjust your rev accordingly.

I prefer the brake pedal over the ebrake because the release is quicker via the pedal.

I don't think power braking is harmful to your car- just to your brake pads.

(I miss my old 5-Speed- didn't have to worry about "power braking")

Best of luck!

Launching your automatic? Thats about half retarded man. Its horrible for the car even if its a manual! Not to mention you would probably be better off just pushing the peddle to the metal........... Unless your driving one bad *** automatic thats built for launching I wouldn't do it. I own a 04 sub sti and I won't even launch that thing and its made to handle it.... use your head man

yes its bad for your car what you are doing is burning up the friction material in the tranny and don't do the neutral drop in like other answer was you can drop a drive line or axle depending weather its a front or rear wheel drive.

the transmission will actually hit the stall speed of the torque converter, you can not adjust that. be cautious, you will be generating some heat. i hope every thing is in good working order.
