I've done this myself when I was raising larval salamanders, and it takes a little time to raise them to any size. I was fortunate that I only needed pinheads.

I found this website back then and found it helpful: http://skylab.org/~chugga/cricket/ The guy who wrote this has a clever (and cheap) way of providing water that keeps the crickets from drowning that worth the time to make. I've also used it for tarantulas, and other small animals.

Buying online may be a better way to go, since it will be less time and work for you, and they get delivered to your door. But you can still keep the tank and set it up as a breeder, and eventually you'll have some "freebies".

A large, deep plastic container. I would fill it with 2-3 inches of potting soil. Get a chick waterer and put cotton in it so they don't drown. Egg cartons for roosting. Commercial dried catfood works. Some kind of heat source to keep the crickets warm in winter and the soil needs to be a little warm for egg incubation.

Oh and crickets tend to attract spiders so I would keep the lid on it. I have found three spiders over a 2 month period trying make a buffet out of my crickets. Its also important that they don't get too warm either, thats why I keep lid off of mine.
