Interesting idea. Might be the first time the question's ever been posed.

There's so much wrong with your question it's hard to know how to answer. Most religious scholars now believe that stories like Jonah and the Whale are parables and not to be taken literally.
I have never heard of a god making a machine, like a submarine, and why would one, when he could make a really big whale? and if you want to take this literally, couldn't he also make it possible for Jonah to stay alive three days? Can't your god do anything he wants? I mean, if one is going to believe one ridiculous thing, like the existence of a god, then one can believe anything, can't one?
It's all a myth; Jonah, the whale, and the god; so believe what you have to in order to face life. Some of us prefer reality to playing pretend, like children.

Well, like a lot of Bible stories, they may appear to us who think we know everything as we are modern aren t we and oh so sophisticated scientifically, to be some fairy story concocted to make a point. The fact is most folks are for less knowledgeable about the world around us and remonstrate most insistantly, when confronted with even the simplest of scientific knowledge, Keep it simple I m only an ordinary person... that is too complex for me as my brain hurts! ...The point of the tale is the lesson and it matters not whether it was a sub, whale or fish God made it so and as a result the folks at Ninevah became believers. How a Miracle can be is less of a concern than the message and the lesson we can learn from the story..and it is a good yarn anyway!

No, it was not a submarine, I assure you. Have you ever heard of a Dunkleosteus? It's a very large fish that lived in Biblical times. As far as how he survived, there's really not much in the Bible that goes into detail as to how he survived, but it did say that there was a weed wrapped around his head, maybe to shield him from the acid.
Nonetheless, check out this site. http://www.angelfire.com/mi/dinosaurs/jonah.html

Frankly I like the notion of a big fish swallowing Jonah, has more of a fairy tale quality about it...

interesting viewpoint...but keep in mind when you say "nobody could live inside a whale" that God can do, or cause to happen, ANYTHING
