My brother owns a carpet cleaning business...NEVER RUB anything in/on your carpet...all you are doing is pushing the stain further down.

Blot, blot, blot...thick white paper towels and white terry cloth towels are best.

New stain...get it up ASAP. Then use a bit of plain water to blot up the stain. If you have it available, seltzer water and OxyClean carpet stain removal are good too...the tiny bubbles help move the stain up and out iof the carpet

Old stain...try same method above, but you will probably not have as much luck. Call in a professional.

In the future vacuum weekly (at least)...there is dirt and other stuff creeping down into the carpet fibers that you can't see. Have a PROFESSIONAL shampoo your carpets once per year...stay away from steam cleaning, "whole house special $99", the grocery store rental things, ChemDry, and the kind you can pick up at Wal-Mart (Hoover SteamVac)...they are useless and a waste of time. Be sure that what ever shampoo they use is safe with pets. Also, be sure to invest in some good floor mats for both the inside entrance and outside entrance of your doors...this will help a great deal. When the dogs come in from outside, wipe down their paws. Taking your shoes off when you get home is another good idea too.

By "dog soil", do you mean feces? You must use a product that will completely remove the smell or the dog might go there again. A product like "Nature's Miracle" (available in many grocery stores and also pet stores) will completely digest the organic material there, both cleaning the carpet and removing the smell.

I believe there are also some spot carpet shampoo products (Resolve, etc.) that should work on some of your dirt. You might also consider investing in a small Dirt Devil or other carpet cleaning machine, since white carpet shows so much dirt.

To prevent future problems, you can have your family members remove their shoes before entering the carpeted are, and put out mats that hopefully the dog will run across before tracking mud into the house.

Best wishes!
