What is it with Harry Potter book series? I don`t get it what makes it so special... I mean for kids yes... and imature teenagers but I know that some grown up`s like the book too. I mean it is not a mature book (I am refering to philosophy, and other things). So what makes it special?... I find it booring.

In my country there was big brother only 2 times, I did not care, I don`t like these things. As I do not watch reality tv or at any person that has money and stuff: "OO!!! A CAR COOL! I am a stupid head!! yea!!!" I am not like this at all. As HP has nothing to do with knowledge.

Its just a new shinny ball in the faces of the people. Harry potter will eventually be forgotten like skip-it, pet rocks and ferbies. Then some other shameless person will try to sell us the new spoon fed drab.

there is Narnia as well by C.S. Lewis or The Immortals Quartet by Tamora Pierce or Ursula K.Leguin's Wizard Of Earthsea Books. the train and the secret gateway in the wall. still there are the Eva Ibbotson books Secret of Platform 13 among others or Diane Duane's So You Want To Be A Wizard series. just have not found others as appealing yet .the cliffhanger trick leaving people wondering what will happen next. the magic the whole idea of the various secrets and monsters. the chracters once grown attached the readers want to know more.the sorting hat and tradition of hogwart's the food, the hope perhaps that magic will be uleashed on the muggles as evil attempts to take over then a battle royale between the houses winner take all. this was hinted at but never delivered.voldemort is evil wants control well at a certain point voldemort has to make his move. if not it will be very dissapointing.at the very least something suitably gruesome to happen to the muggles. there has been noevidence of voldemort's evil as he has been fighting harry all this time. one hopes some of his evil will occur on the way to future battles and the house of slytherin is it will be used against the rest lead by voldemort. thing is voldemort will be defated by harry after a hard struggle where voldemort manages to get past the protections on harry. harry will have to get much better at wizardery and will eventually defeat vold. after many encounters. this will be a good fight. but much evil should ensue i really hope the author pulls out all the stops puts in all the ingrediants to a good literary repast.

How many people do you think buy these books and never actually read them, but just carry them around under the misguided pretence that it actually makes them look cool
and with it.
If you ask me any 30 plus business type person carrying the latest harry potter under his arm and thinking they're the dogs bollocks needs some serious re-education where societies opinion of such people is concerned I and i'm sure around 99.9% of the (normal) population will agree with this
I dont go out of my way to read any of the books i read as a child or are meant for todays children (with the exception of roald dahll)
and i'm sure if i pocketed the money that J K Rowling has from the potter series then i would at least crack a smile
the miserable cow

It's a good fantasy. Our children are growing up with less fantasy stories and books than when I was growing up. Peter Pan was great back then, but now what is there? I am grateful to the author for publishing this great FANTASY series.

I am afraid to ask (but am going to anyway) how many of you that don't like HP fawn all over American Idol or Big Brother? Now that's crap, just mindless crap.

At least the Harry Potter series is expanding these children's imagination (and it doesn't hurt adults either) ;)

ask yourself this, would you bring the kids to see the french film "trois homme avec les enfant" better known worldwide as 3 men and a baby, remade for the mass market directed by leonard nimmoy. the only reason harry potter is sooo popular is due to popularity itself. little jacquatsa and lucinda cant be seen dead in kindergarden without the latest potter book (even though they cant read yet). its a bit like goths and clunky boots. it seems to be a middle class affliction, not literature itself but the "oh look at me i've the latest potter book" big fuckin deal hurrah you can read words and shi't. so what!
to the big lad below me: roald dahl, exactly! proper reading books for kids and grown ups, him and doctor suess have never been out of print. how long before the latest potter book will be in the bargin bin in asda

It's a fantasy novel and because it has such a high profile most adults I believe read it out of curiousity to begin with, but get sucked in to the story. It's fun. However It's not for everyone as you have just proved

Igonring the magic as depicted in the books, people can identify with Harry and his friends because they either currently are or at some point in their life were them. Here you've got someone who for tne years of his life was treated badly and often picked on. How many of us have been picked on as kids? And how many have been treated badly by members of our own family? He's an orphan, something those of us who are orphans can sympathize with. When he finally learns of his heritage and goes to Hogwarts he ends up with a teacher who seems to have it in for him. How many have always thought that one or more of their teachers hated them and were out to make their lives a living nightmare? Because of a prophecy and the fact that Voldemort failed when he tried to kill him as a baby, he's treated differently from other kids. How many of us are treated differently from others for some reason?

If you look at it, not just at Harry but at his friends, you can find something of real people in them.
