Actually they have been put in one group because they have similar properties! Their valence electrons are same in number. Thus they exhibit similar behavior in chemical reactions, which are primarily determined by the valency electrons.

Sodium (for instance) has one "available" electron and therefore, two sodium atoms can combine with the carbonate.
